Add a Gift Subscription Banner to Your Site

With gift subscriptions, a visitor to your site can pay to renew your WordPress.com plan and domain when they are close to expiring. Visitors will see a banner on your public site an invitation to renew your subscription for you. This guide will show you how to enable and disable the gift subscription option.

Enable or disable the gift subscription banner

Enable or disable a banner on your public site that will allow your visitors to gift you your plan and domain renewal costs. Gift subscriptions are enabled by default if auto-renewal is disabled for your site’s plan.

You can also manually enable gift subscriptions for your site by following these steps:

  1. Log into your WordPress.com account and visit your Sites list by clicking the “W” logo at the top left.
  2. Hover over the site in your list and click the “Overview” icon:
The Overview icon that appears when hovering over a site in the Sites list.
  1. Click the Settings tab.
  2. Click the Accept a Gift Subscription” section.
    • Check the box next to “Allow site visitors to gift your plan and domain renewal costs” to enable the gift subscription banner on your site.
    • Uncheck the box next to “Allow site visitors to gift your plan and domain renewal costs” to disable the gift subscription banner on your site.
  3. Click the Save button to apply your changes, and the banner will appear (or be removed) on your site for your visitors to gift you a subscription.

Accept a gift subscription

If your site has auto-renew disabled, and its plan is expiring soon (within 5 days for monthly plans, 54 days for annual plans), visitors to your public site will see a banner at the top of their screen with an invitation to renew your subscription for you:

The gift banner shown at the top of the site with an invitation to gift the site owner with a subscription by clicking the Gift button.

“Enjoy this site? Gift the author a WordPress.com plan.

If the site’s plan has already expired, and the site has the gift subscriptions enabled, the following banner will be displayed:

The gift banner shown at the top of the site that has its plan already expired, with an invitation to gift the site owner with a subscription by clicking the Gift button.

“This site’s plan has expired. Gift the author a WordPress.com upgrade.”

By clicking the “Gift” button, your visitors will be prompted to log in to their WordPress.com account and redirected to the checkout page to provide their payment details and make the purchase on your behalf. The gift giver will receive a receipt via email. Their gift is a one-time occurrence and will not automatically renew.

You will also receive an email informing you that you have been gifted a subscription. Your subscription’s expiry date will be updated on your Purchases page. The email notification will not include the gift giver’s name or other identifiable information, but they may contact you directly to share their support. You could create a post to show your gratitude for the gift.
