Google Marketing Live was last week, and as expected, it was packed with updates. Here are a few of the releases that stood out to me as the most impactful for paid media practitioners: 🤖 Ads in AI Overviews The long-awaited integration of ads into AI Overviews is officially here. Right now, it’s limited to shopping results, but search ads are expected to follow soon. Targeting is still unclear, but the recommendation from Google is to lean on broad match, Performance Max, or AI Max for Search (expected in an upcoming rollout). One to watch closely. 🔎 AI Max for Search This changes targeting from specific search terms to broader themes or categories. Especially important as user queries have moved towards abstract and question-based formats with AI. As AI reshapes how people search, we’ll likely see fewer exact-match terms and more trend-level reporting. AI Max will be an interesting test for B2B and if it can actually perform. 🤯 PMax Is Getting More Useful Performance Max now includes search term and channel-level reporting. This update helps break down what content and surfaces are driving results. Also: more controls are coming to support prospecting, and limit result inflation from remarketing. 📺 Attributed Branded Searches A new metric is rolling out to show how your video ads impact brand search volume. This helps validate YouTube performance and proves the impact on branded search lift. A step in the right direction for measuring influenced conversion uplift. These are just a few of the launches, but some of my favorites. Most announcements followed the AI-heavy trend, but now many of them feel useful, not just shiny objects.
