    Google Marketing Live was last week, and as expected, it was packed with updates. Here are a few of the releases that stood out to me as the most impactful for paid media practitioners: 🤖 Ads in AI Overviews The long-awaited integration of ads into AI Overviews is officially here. Right now, it’s limited to shopping results, but search ads are expected to follow soon. Targeting is still unclear, but the recommendation from Google is to lean on broad match, Performance Max, or AI Max for Search (expected in an upcoming rollout). One to watch closely. 🔎 AI Max for Search This changes targeting from specific search terms to broader themes or categories. Especially important as user queries have moved towards abstract and question-based formats with AI. As AI reshapes how people search, we’ll likely see fewer exact-match terms and more trend-level reporting. AI Max will be an interesting test for B2B and if it can actually perform. 🤯 PMax Is Getting More Useful Performance Max now includes search term and channel-level reporting. This update helps break down what content and surfaces are driving results. Also: more controls are coming to support prospecting, and limit result inflation from remarketing. 📺 Attributed Branded Searches A new metric is rolling out to show how your video ads impact brand search volume. This helps validate YouTube performance and proves the impact on branded search lift. A step in the right direction for measuring influenced conversion uplift. These are just a few of the launches, but some of my favorites. Most announcements followed the AI-heavy trend, but now many of them feel useful, not just shiny objects.     🚀 304 vs 200 Response Times: The Crawl Budget Hack You're Missing Recently implemented Cache-Control headers for a site with over 150M URLs - returning 304 when content unchanged, 200 when modified. The efficiency gains are pretty nice. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀:  • 304 responses: 226.8ms average  • 200 responses: 285.6ms average  • 𝟯𝟬𝟰𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟭.𝟮𝟲𝘅 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 (20.6% time savings) For large sites, this is critical because every slight reduction of response time leads to more effective crawling. 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: If Googlebot crawls 12M pages/week with 200s → switching to 304s = 𝟭𝟱.𝟭𝗠 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 (+3.1M additional pages, 26% increase) 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: Proper Cache-Control implementation = more crawl budget for pages that actually need attention. If you're not serving 304s for unchanged content, you're missing crawl efficiency gains. However, excessive 304s may signal a content freshness problem.     🛑 In uncertain economic times, many teams start tightening budgets. Paid media is often the first place they look to cut as it’s typically one of the largest cost centers for marketing departments. The logic makes sense: save money, stay cautious, manage risk. But the better move might not be to pause spend. It might be to refocus it. When macroeconomic pressure increases - inflation, tariffs, uncertainty - competition in ad auctions tends to lighten up. And when others pull back, that creates a window for more efficient, cost-effective campaigns.
